Eligibility

Those eligible to take the Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese (hereafter, “this Test”) are as follows:

(1) Applicants whose native language is not Japanese.
(2) Applicants of Indonesian nationality should be 18 years of age or older on the day of the test, calculated based on the Western calendar.
(3) Applicants of Myanmar nationality should be 17 years of age or older on the day of the test, calculated based on the Western calendar.
(4) In addition to (1) through (3) above, those who take this Test in Japan must have a status of residence in Japan ("Short-Term Stay" visa is also acceptable).

Regarding the use of personal information

1. The Japan Foundation will handle personal information (*) appropriately in compliance with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information in Japan and other relevant laws and guidelines.

*Personal information refers to information about a living individual that can identify a specific individual through their name, date of birth, or other descriptions contained in the information (all matters described or recorded in documents, drawings, or electronic records, or expressed using voice, actions, or other methods) (including information about the individual registered when Create a new Prometric ID and making an exam reservation, as well as any subsequent changes provided to the Japan Foundation, exam records, scoring results, and other types of information), or personal identification codes.

2. The Japan Foundation will use personal information for the following purposes:

  • Smooth implementation, evaluation, and scoring of this examination
  • Prevention or investigation of academic misconduct in examinations organized or co-organized by the Japan Foundation, including this examination.
  • Statistical analysis, research, or training of this study in a form that does not identify individuals.

3. The Japan Foundation will not disclose personal information collected from applicants to third parties in a manner that identifies the individual, except in the cases listed below.

  • When required by law
  • If consent has been obtained from the applicant, or if the information is provided to the applicant.
  • In situations where information is disclosed within the scope necessary to fulfill tasks that have been entrusted to contractors, etc. commissioned by the Japan Foundation to undertake the processing of information collected

4. If an applicant wishes to be notified of the purpose of use of their personal information, to have it disclosed, corrected, added to, deleted, or to have their personal information removed from the public, the Japan Foundation will respond in accordance with its personal information protection policy.

5. When the Japan Foundation entrusts a portion of the handling of personal information to a third party within the scope of the above-mentioned purposes of use of personal information, it will ensure that the third party implements appropriate security management measures.

6. The Japan Foundation will disclose the applicant's personal information and the scoring results of this examination to the administrative agency or other relevant body in Japan or the country where the examination is administered, upon request from such agency or body.

7. The Immigration Services Agency of Japan will operate an external website for checking exam pass/fail information, utilizing information disclosed by the Japan Foundation. On this website, by entering the applicant's examination number and date of birth as search criteria, only whether the applicant has passed or not will be displayed.

8. If a Japanese or foreign administrative agency, university or other educational institution, company, etc., makes an inquiry regarding the accuracy of the contents Notification of assessment results of this examination for legitimate reasons, the Japan Foundation will respond to such inquiry.

Misconduct

1. If an applicant engages in conduct that is deemed fraudulent by the contractor for administering this examination (Prometric Japan Co., Ltd.), or if the Japan Foundation determines for any reason that there are doubts about the validity of the score, the Japan Foundation reserves the right to take the following actions: conduct a re-examination, invalidate the examination results (including those from past examinations), withhold notification of Test Result, prohibit the applicant from taking this examination in the future, and share the information with relevant departments within the organization. In addition, if an examination result is invalidated, and an inquiry regarding the result is made by a company, school, or organization, the Japan Foundation will notify the company, school, or organization that the result is invalid or a failure.

2. If the Japan Foundation is unable to verify the authenticity of the contents of the examination Notification of assessment results due to inquiries from Japanese or foreign government agencies, universities or other educational institutions, companies, etc., the Japan Candidate and prohibit them from taking this examination in the future.

3. The Japan Foundation shall not be liable for any damages or claims of any kind incurred by Candidate as a result of conducting a re-examination, invalidating examination Test Result, or prohibiting examinees from taking this examination in the future.
